SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Even though Six Flags New England is closed for the season, many of their employees were busy Friday.

Friday was “Volunteer Service Day” for dozens of Six Flags employees. One work detail spent the day applying a fresh coat of paint to the nearly 50-year-old Springfield Boys and Girls Club on Carew Street.

Boys and Girls Club Director of Operations Randy Manseau credits the volunteers with saving them thousands of dollars. “Anytime you paint the rooms, you put new flooring in, it’s a pricey situation, when we have people come in.”

Other Six Flags volunteers spent the day handling maintenance chores at the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts in Hatfield, and at the Ronald McDonald house in Springfield
