In 2014, the Inaugural Reach for the Stars & Alumni Hall of Fame Induction was a milestone in the history of the Springfield Boys & Girls Club. The Springfield Boys & Girls Club inducted five outstanding alumni into the first-ever Alumni Hall of Fame class: Joseph Federico, Charles Hollins, Arthur Jones, Garrett McCarthy, Mark Moran and Peter Picknelly.
The 2nd Annual Reach for the Stars Luncheon & Alumni Hall of Fame Induction took place on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at the Sheraton Springfield and gave the Springfield Boys & Girls Club the opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the accomplishments of our alumni while supporting our Saturday drop-in programs. Celebrating 124 years of unwavering dedication to youth services, the Springfield Boys & Girls Club inducted seven outstanding alumni into the second Alumni Hall of Fame class-George Caulton, Manny Fonseca, Tim Gallagher, Abe Moses, Tony Pettaway, Paul Samson and Lawrence Weekley. During the event, 120 guests enjoyed a wonderful lunch, a private viewing of the Festival of Trees, and were able to hear more from our remarkable inductees. With a day filled with laughter and reminiscing, our net income was more than $4,000!
All proceeds from the event support our Saturday Drop-In Programs. The Springfield Boys & Girls Club is one of the only youth service agencies in the City of Springfield that stays open on Saturdays. In 2014, the Carew Street facility served over 800 youth on Saturdays during the academic year. These children come from every geographical region within the City of Springfield, including Liberty Heights, Memorial Square, South End, Old Hill/Six Corners, North End, Indian Orchard, and Forest Park. The Saturday programs operate from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and serve children ages 6 – 18. For over 100 children each Saturday during the school year, the Club is their second home. It serves as the only positive place away from the streets where they can engage in safe, fun developmental programs that enhance their social, emotional, physical, and educational well-being.
